Black Winged Stilt.
I had never seen a Black Winged Stilt except on TV so when a pair arrived and nested at Martin Mere near Southport I went with some pals for a look. On a freezing day with the wind blowing straight into the hide I sat for nearly 3 hours waiting for the change-over of the nesting birds to get both male and female together. I was assured by the watchers present that the male would return and then the female would leave. Not when I'm there they don't. The male flew past the hide and when he was 20 yards from the island she scooted off. So much for a shot of the loving couple together. Still considering the nest was some 100 - 125yds away from the hide I was reasonably pleased with the results.
